THE SHOW

The Show:     Slamming Sexism // Illuminating Inequality is the work of 7 Women & Gender Studies students to start a conversation about everyday sexism and gender inequality faced by women both on & off stage. At 8 pm on March 29, a mixed male & female cast of performance artists will explore - through both written pieces and improvised scenes - the experiences of women within a heterosexual patriarchal society and challenge gendered roles & stereotypes.

The Slam:      Experience the stories of a group of writers as they share their experiences with everyday sexism through slam poetry.  The pressures put on us by society to conform to the binary gender system affect us constantly throughout our lives.  Join us as we challenge and ‘slam’ these pressures and experiences, and share our stories.  Do you have a piece to share?  Submit it and become a part of the show.  Sexism affects every person, sex, age, and race.  What do you have to say?

The Jam:      Join a mixed cast of nine university improvisers as they perform short form & long form improv games based on audience suggestions. The games will be chosen to facilitate a dialogue on the influences of gender within scenes themselves, as well on women's experiences within the comedy/improv worlds more broadly. Throughout the event, audience members are encouraged to notice instances when improvisers are profiled by gender stereotypes or their improv is informed by prescribed gender roles. Following the show, these Tweets will help us to facilitate an ongoing online conversation about the experiences of women in comedy & improv. Join the conversation online by tweeting us about your gendered experience in improv, comedy, or similar activities @femmegrandjam.
